If you’ve ever looked at your iPhone’s Bluetooth list and wondered what ATUMTEK, DX01Gu, or MY-CAR refers to, you’re not alone. Many Bluetooth accessories come with default names that aren’t helpful, especially if you use multiple similar devices.

Fortunately, iOS allows you to rename many Bluetooth devices, making it easier to identify which is which.

To rename a device:

  1. Go to Settings > Bluetooth.

  2. Make sure the device is powered on and connected.

  3. Tap the blue ⓘ icon next to its name.

  4. If the device supports renaming, you’ll see a Name field where you can enter a custom label.

Not all Bluetooth devices allow renaming, so if the Name field isn’t visible, that device doesn’t support this feature.

Renaming devices can be particularly useful if:

  • You have multiple earbuds or speakers for different settings (e.g., “Gym Earbuds” and “Work Headset”)

  • You and a partner each have similar devices (e.g., “My Car” and “Sam’s Car”)

  • You want to make your Bluetooth list more accessible and easier to navigate

While you’re in the device settings, take a moment to check the Device Type menu. Options include Car Stereo, Headphone, Hearing Aid, Speaker, and Other. Selecting the correct category helps iOS provide more accurate Headphone Audio Level measurements. That’s important because iOS uses this data to alert you if you’ve been listening at volumes that could impact your hearing over time.

It’s worth noting that renaming a device only changes how it appears on the device you're using. If you have multiple iPhones, iPads, or Macs, you'll need to rename the device separately on each one.

Taking a few seconds to personalize your Bluetooth list reduces confusion and can improve usability, enhance safety features, and make your everyday tech experience a bit smoother.
