Research suggests that exposure to blue light can trick your body into thinking it's daytime, making it harder to fall asleep if you work late on a Mac with a bright white screen, which emits a lot of blue light. To combat this, macOS offers a feature called Night Shift. This feature subtly shifts the screen colors as the sun sets, reducing the amount of blue light hitting your eyes. Essentially, the display takes on a slightly warmer hue.

To configure your Night Shift schedule so it automatically turns on and off, follow these steps:

  1. Go to System Settings > Displays > Night Shift.
  2. You can set any custom times, but selecting Sunset to Sunrise adjusts for the sun’s movement in your location throughout the year.

A quick note: if you edit photos or videos, or work on graphics where specific colors are crucial, Night Shift’s color changes might be problematic.

Using Night Shift can help align your body’s natural rhythms, making it easier to wind down and fall asleep after a late night of work.
