While online security is crucial, it’s just as important to safeguard your Mac from local threats. You don’t want to step away for lunch and have someone snoop through your emails, messages, photos, or other private files. Luckily, macOS offers built-in tools to keep your data safe when you’re away from your desk.

To protect your Mac, start by setting it to activate the screen saver or sleep the display after a few minutes of inactivity (on a laptop, simply close the lid). Then, enable the "Require password after screen saver begins or display is turned off" setting and choose a short delay. We recommend 1 or 5 minutes, depending on your preference for balancing security with convenience.

For quicker control, consider using Hot Corners—a feature that lets you activate the screen saver by simply moving your mouse to a specific corner of the screen. This way, you can instantly lock your Mac when stepping away, without waiting for a timer.

You can also use location-based security options, such as third-party apps or macOS's built-in features, that automatically lock your Mac when you move a certain distance away. This is particularly useful in office settings where you may frequently step out of the room.

For an even more seamless experience, take advantage of Touch ID or use your Apple Watch to unlock your Mac without typing a password, speeding up access when you return.

Finally, remember to sync your Mac’s security settings with other devices in the Apple ecosystem. Find My Mac can help you remotely lock or locate a lost Mac, adding an extra layer of security across all your devices.
