It might seem like the top result in a Google search is the safest and most trustworthy—but that’s not always the case. Relying on those top results can sometimes lead you straight into a scam.
We’ve recently heard of two real-world examples that serve as strong warnings. In one case, a user searched for HP support and called a number shown in the top search result—only to speak with a scammer who attempted to gain remote access to their computer. In another, someone tried to download Dropbox and unknowingly installed malware instead. In both cases, the users thought they were making safe choices because the links appeared high in Google’s rankings.
These incidents may result from “SEO poisoning,” a tactic where cybercriminals use search engine optimization techniques to push malicious websites toward the top of search results. These pages are designed to look legitimate but are anything but.
The scary part? These fake listings can disappear or change quickly, which makes them hard to trace or report. That’s why it’s best not to trust search results blindly—especially when you’re looking to download software or contact tech support.
Protect yourself by going directly to a company’s official website instead of clicking on search result links. Type the address in manually, or use a trusted bookmark. This small step can help you avoid fake downloads, phishing attempts, and support scams.
